First Degree Murder Charges Laid in Aroland Shooting

GREENSTONE – NEWS – On April 19, 2019 at approximately 1 a.m., members of the Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint of an altercation at the POW WOW Grounds in the community of Aroland First Nation involving a firearm.

OPP and Nishnawbe-Aski (NAPS) officers attended the scene and located a seriously injured male. Nakina Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended and pronounced the victim deceased. Police located a second male at the scene and placed him under arrest without incident.

The investigation is ongoing with members of the Greenstone Crime Unit, NAPS, OPP Forensic Identification Unit (FIU) and OPP Provincial Liaison Team (PLT), under the direction of Detective Inspector Mary Shannon, OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

Twenty-one-year-old Brady GAGNON of Aroland First Nation, Ontario has been charged with First Degree Murder contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

A post mortem examination is scheduled to take place on April 22, 2019, at the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) in Toronto.

The accused is being held in custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail until his next court appearance.
