Bantam Kings take HNO District title; peewees force 3rd and deciding game

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Kings claimed the Hockey Northwestern Ontario District Championship bantam crown Saturday while the peewee side also won to force a third and deciding contest Sunday at Fort William First Nation Arena.

The Bantams completed a two-game sweep with a 5-0 triumph over the Kenora Thistles while the peewees posted a 3-0 shutout against the Dryden Paper Kings.

Game 1 of the AAA midget best-of-five was scheduled for Saturday night at FWFNA.

Matthew Valiquette picked up the eventual game-winner for the bantams 11:23 into the opening frame.

Tyler Lewis and Noah Broughton added to the cushion in the middle session to put their side up by three.

Thunder Bay captain Jack Cook added one on the power play seven minutes into the third before Broughton rounded out the scoring.

Broughton also had an assist for a three-point outing while Jeremy Dunmore and Jacob Sargent had two helpers each.

Brayden McKever had the shutout for the Kings.

In the peewee match-up, the game was scoreless after one period of play before Easton Glousher tallied twice for Thunder Bay in the back half of the second stanza.

Kaden Goodwin added some insurance in the third while Carter George posted the shutout.

Sunday has Game 2 of the Kings – Thistles AAA midget affair at 12:30 p.m. followed by the peewee finale at 3 p.m.
