OPP have laid a number of charges in a stolen vehicle investigationMARATHON – NEWS – On November 11, 2017, members of the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision approximately 10km west of Marathon on Highway 17 in Coldwell Township.

A single motor vehicle, a Ford F150 pickup truck travelling eastbound, lost control and left the roadway entering the south ditch. The driver attempted to drive the vehicle out of the ditch but was unable to, coming to rest against a rock cut. A local tow company attended to remove the vehicle.

The male driver and female passenger received no injuries.

While speaking with the driver and passenger, the officers became suspicious with the information they were being given and it was investigated further.

As a result of the investigation the male driver, Stefan HUERTAS a 25-year-old male from Scarborough, ON was charged with:

  • CC 403(1)(d) Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice
  • CC 145(3) Fail to comply with Recognizance, to wit keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
  • CC 368(1)(a) Use, deals, acts on forged document

The female passenger received no charges. Both had left the area after the incident but were located traveling to Sault Saint Marie via taxi. HUERTAS was arrested and transported back to Marathon regarding the charges. On 13 November 2017, he was remanded in Marathon to a court date in Thunder Bay on 16 November 2017. He was transported to the Thunder Bay District Jail where he will be held until his future court date regarding these charges.

The driver was also charged with HTA 53(1) x2 Drive a Motor Vehicle while under Suspension in Ontario for Unpaid Fines, and Judgement. As a result of these charges, the vehicle was impounded for 7 days. He was issued two summonses for Provincial Offences Act court in Marathon on 13 February 2018 to answer to these charges.

The investigation is ongoing.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
