Strong Start for Major Midget Kings in Steinbach

STEINBACH – SPORTS – The Thunder Bay major midget Kings got off to an impressive start at the 2017 TELUS Cup West Regional in Steinbach, Man., Thursday after skating to a convincing 5-1 victory over the host Eastman Selects.

The club started strong by grabbing a 3-0 lead after one period of play.

Jacob Brown and Elijah Loon-Stewardson paced the Kings’ attack with a goal and an assist in the triumph.

Also scoring for Thunder Bay was Robert McCollum, Cody Bruchkowski and Robert Tyska.

Burke Heide had the lone Selects marker.

Ryan Fanti made 29 stops to record the win for Thunder Bay who fired 34 attempts on the Eastman net.

The Hockey Northwestern Ontario AAA midget district champion Kings are back at it Friday at 6 p.m. vs. the Winnipeg Wild, who lost 2-1 in their initial contest vs. the Regina Pat Canadians.

Thunder Bay wraps up round robin play Saturday at 1:30 p.m. vs. Regina.

Sunday’s title game will feature the top team teams in round robin competition with a berth to the TELUS Cup Canadian national midget championship, April 24-30, in Prince George, B.C. on the line.
