SIU Investigate OPP Shooting in Nipigon

NIPIGON, Ont. – Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit will investigate a fatal shooting in Nipigon involving an Ontario Provincial Police officer.

The SIU state:

Preliminary information indicates the following:
  • At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2016, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a home in Nipigon.
  • Upon arrival, officers encountered a man and there was an interaction. One officer discharged his firearm, striking the man.
  • The man was transported to Nipigon District Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2314.


The Ontario Provincial Police have not issued any statements on the circumstances which led to the use of deadly force, and are now following operational protocol in putting all comments over to the SIU.
