THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Thunder Bay and Loch Lomond Ski area are hosting the Mackenzie Investments U16 Ontario Provincial Alpine Ski Championships March 7-11.  This event moves around the province each year and returns to Thunder Bay every 4 years.

170 of Ontario’s best 14 and 15 year old athletes will be competing at Loch Lomond for Provincial Championship honours as well as for the opportunity to represent Ontario at the Eastern North American Can Am races and the International FIS Kinder races in Whistler, British Columbia. 

14 of these athletes have just returned from representing Ontario at the Canada Winter Games.  10 local Thunder Bay athletes have qualified for the event and have been training hard at their home hills of Loch Lomond and Mount Baldy to prepare for the event.

The races take place at Loch Lomond Ski Area, March 7 through 11th. Slalom events take place Saturday and Sunday.  Super G on Monday on a brand new Super G track with a temporary 5 metre high start ramp.  Giant Slalom races will round out the action on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is a huge event and hosting it requires many sponsors and volunteers.  Visit the event website at www.u16ski.ca for lots of information about the event and its sponsors. The Best Western Plus Nor’Wester Hotel & Conference Centre is the host hotel for the event, with the Victoria Inn Hotel & Conference Centre also accommodating the skiers, officials and parent from out of town.
