Thunder Bay – Sports – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves men’s basketball team came away with an impressive 67-58 win over the Western Mustangs Saturday evening.

On this occasion the team honored Dwayne Harvey, Ryan Thomson, and Anthony McIntosh, who complete their careers as Thunderwolves.

Harvey has been the go-to Thunderwolves’ play maker for several seasons now, while Thomson ends his career as the winningest Thunderwolf of all time (tied with Joseph Jones), and has served as an assistant coach this season. McIntosh, meanwhile, has the first ever bid to be the first Thunderwolf to make the playoffs in all 5 years of his eligibility.

The Mustangs looked tough for the first quarter, limiting Lakehead to 10 points and their defense near impenetrable. That same defense would start to show cracks as the second quarter wore on, and Lakehead trailed by one point at the break, 29-28.

Lakehead continued to play inspired ball in the second half, especially defensive shut down artist Alex Robichaud, who was tasked with guarding the league’s second-best scorer Greg Morrow, who finished the game with 17 points, 6 below his season average.

Anthony McIntosh rose to the occasion on Saturday, leading his team with 18 points (4-of-5 FG, 10-of-11 FT) to go with 6 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. All 3 blocks came against Western’s 4th year veteran Anthony Spiridis, who did not shy away from the rim despite McIntosh’s repeated refusal at the rim. Spiridis finished 0-7 from the field.

Robichaud finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Dwayne Harvey led the ‘Wolves in rebounding with 9, while scoring 9 points to go with 6 assists.

Coach Manny Furtado stated, “It’s always nice to get a win but tonight was even more special with it being seniors’ night. Next we have to get ready for two tough games on the road at Guelph next week.”
