THUNDER BAY – BUSINESS – Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) has been named one of Canada’s ten most admired corporate cultures of 2014.

“This is a significant honour, and a testament to the many dedicated people who work and volunteer at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre,” said Andrée Robichaud, President and CEO of TBRHSC and Acting CEO of TBRRI. “I really believe that what makes us a leader in corporate culture is our focus on patients and families, not only by members of the healthcare team, but everyone from housekeeping and switchboard to human resources and senior management.”

“This national recognition is well deserved, because the culture at our hospital is making a difference to patients and families. At every level of decision-making at TBRHSC, we make sure to have input from Patient Family Advisors (PFAs) who are recent patients or family members of patients,” says Keith Taylor, Co-Chair, Patient and Family Advisory Council. PFAs take part in Senior Management Team meetings and have an equal voice, even in hiring members of senior leadership.

“We demonstrate our commitment to Patient and Family Centred Care in everything we do, from our job advertisements, interviews, orientation, mandatory annual staff education, and performance reviews,” says Rod Morrison, Executive Vice-President, Health Human Resources, Planning, and Strategy. “By embedding these values throughout the organization, we ensure that each employee, volunteer, and learner is mindful of our commitment to the Patient and Family Centred Care philosophy.”

To realize TBRHSC’s vision, “Healthy Together,” employees, particularly the Wellness Committee, work very hard to ensure that everyone in the TBRHSC is aware of ways to be healthy. Initiatives throughout the year encourage employees to be smoke-free, eat well, stay active and get screened.

A number of programs are in place to recognize and encourage excellence, such as our annual Walk the Talk awards for employees who go above and beyond expectations. In fact, TBRHSC’s Human Resources has recently been recognized for its corporate Rewards and Recognition initiatives.
