Thunder Bay Queens Win Over St. Mary’s Flames

THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens used the combined 40-save performance by goaltenders Jayde Turcotte and Sydeny Isbell to shutout the St. Mary’s Academy Flames 3-0 Sunday in the finale of a three-game weekend set held at Fort William First Nation Arena.

The lone goal of the opening stanza came 4:14 in as Azia Vass finished off the work of Samantha Isbell for the eventual game-winner.

Thunder Bay added another in the middle session at 4:22 when Montana Russo fed Samantha Strassburger to make it 2-0 for the home side.

Bronwyn Bolduc then iced it for the Queens with an empty net effort in the final minute of the third with Emily Oleksuk drawing the lone assist on the final marker of the game.

Shelby Audet and Anna Kulas teamed up to face 19 shots in a losing cause the Winnipeg-based Flames, who took the first two games of the series Saturday by scores of 4-3 and 5-3.

The next out of town action for the Sportop Queens will be another tough test for the midget AA squad as they head to Milwaukee, Wis., Feb. 7-9 to compete in the Tier 1 – 2 Nations Showcase event.
