THUNDER BAY , ON – SPORTS – It was another big strongman weekend for Thunder Bay athletes as several home town strongmen made their way to the 12th annual Dubreuilville Strongman Challenge. Ben Thompson, Jared Wick, Jake Di Paulo and Luke Skaarup all made the 500km trek down Hwy 17, from Thunder Bay to Dubreuilville, to compete against some of the best strongmen from across Canada and the USA. This annual event draws in spectators from across the Thunder Bay and Algoma Districts and features a Professional Strongman, semi- pro strongman, strongwoman, and strong kids challenges in addition to music, dancing and an exhibit from Science North.

In the Pro Strongman Competition fifteen athletes competed in eight tests of strength including: the tire flip (950lbs tire x 60ft), overhead press medley (200lbs keg, 175lbs dumbbell, 320lbs log, 250lbs log), SUV deadlift (950lbs x reps), atlas stones (275, 315, 330, 350 and 360lbs to 54” pillars), Truck Pull (25000lbs x 90ft), wheelbarrow carry for maximum weight, yoke walk (880lbs x 60ft), and a super medley (315lbs famer’s walk x 60ft, 700lbs frame carry x 60ft, 410lbs duck walk x 60ft and a 1050lbs tire flip for 2 flips). The athlete line up this year was the best ever with several World’s Strongest Man veterans and top pro strongmen including: Jean Francois Caron, Karl Gillingham, Dave Ostlund, Jason Bergmann, Maxime Boudreault, Luke Skaarup and Derek Devaughn to name a few.

After the competition was through it was Jason Bergmann of Appleton Wisconsin who claimed top spot followed by the reigning 3x Canada’s Strongest Man JF Caron, and Dave Ostlund. Local strongman Luke Skaarup placed 5th with two 3rd place finishes in the tire flip and deadlift events despite competing with a torn calf muscle for all events. Ben Thompson made his pro strongman debut placing 14th in this difficult field and managed to place 12th in both the tire flip and yoke events. The final results are below.

Jim Paquet (Quebec)- 39 12. Maxime Lemiere (Quebec)- 38 13. Steve Halladay (Saskatchewan)- 33 14. Ben Thompson (Ontario)- 18 15. Derek Devaughn (Indiana)- 0- injured.

In the semi pro competition, eleven up and coming strongmen competed in four events with the winner earning his pro card and a chance to compete with the big guys. The athletes competed in the car deadlift, the circus dumbbell press, a keg loading event and the tire flip event. In the end it was Adam Dircks from Appleton, Wisconsin who won the event with first place finishes in the Circus Dumbbell Press and Deadlift events, followed closely by Jim Paquet from Quebec City, Quebec who won the keg loading event. Thunder Bay’s Jared Wick placed 6th overall with 4th place in the tire flip and 5th place in the keg loading event. Also, from Thunder Bay, Jake Di Paulo placed 8th overall with a 3rd place finish in the Dumbbell event and a 6th place finish in the keg loading event. The final results were as follows:
