Edmonton’s stars took control in the third period to secure a 4-2 win over Vancouver
Thunder Bay – Hockey Town Update — Connor McDavid assisted on three goals and extended his season-opening point streak to 18 games as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 on Saturday at Rogers Place.
The 18-game run is the longest season-opening point streak by an active NHL player. McDavid moved past the 17-game marks set by himself in 2021-22 and William Nylander in 2023-24. He leads the league with 47 points, including 37 assists.
Mattias Ekholm opened the scoring from a McDavid feed at 9:14 of the first period, but Max Sasson tied the game with nine seconds left in the frame. After a scoreless second, Jason Dickinson put Edmonton ahead 49 seconds into the third by converting his own rebound.
Leon Draisaitl made it 3-1 on the power play at 4:00, finishing another McDavid setup. Brock Boeser pulled Vancouver within one at 17:25, but Draisaitl scored into an empty net with 45 seconds remaining. He finished with two goals and one assist.
Devon Levi made 20 saves in his return from a seven-game absence caused by a lower-body injury. Zach Hyman also returned after missing five games with a neck injury and recorded an assist. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins left early in the second period after being struck in the head by a teammate’s shot. Edmonton coach Mike Babcock said the initial assessment eased concern about a broken jaw, though further evaluation was expected.
Edmonton improved to 12-3-3 and opened a three-point lead atop the Pacific Division. Vancouver fell to 3-15-1 after a fifth straight loss and has dropped 15 of its past 16 games.
McDavid also matched Adam Oates for the second-longest assist streak in NHL history at 18 games. Wayne Gretzky holds the record at 23.
