OPP say speeding and seatbelt violations were the top issues during Feb. 16–17 enforcement push
MARATHON, ON — Ontario Provincial Police officers from across the North West Region laid 166 charges during a two-day traffic enforcement blitz in Marathon and on surrounding highways.
Police say the initiative ran February 16 and 17, 2026, and included 133 traffic stops. In addition to the charges, officers issued 77 warnings under the Highway Traffic Act and related legislation.
Speeding and seatbelts topped the list
OPP report that most of the charges stemmed from speeding and seatbelt non-compliance.
Police continue to point to speeding as a major factor in serious and fatal crashes, and note that failing to wear a seatbelt significantly increases the risk of severe injury or death in a collision.
Focus on prevention and compliance
The enforcement effort was aimed at improving road safety, increasing compliance with traffic laws, and reducing preventable collisions in and around the community.
OPP reminder to drivers
OPP are urging motorists to:
-
Obey posted speed limits
-
Ensure everyone is properly buckled in
-
Stay attentive behind the wheel
Road safety, police emphasize, is a shared responsibility.
