Kenora OPP warns drivers of icy roads, blowing snow, and collisions along Hwy 17; non-essential travel discouraged.

KENORA – NEWS – The Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning drivers about dangerous road conditions across the region and along Highway 17, as icy surfaces and increased blowing snow continue to reduce visibility and lead to collisions.

OPP officers have already responded to multiple crashes and vehicles in the ditch, as motorists struggle with deteriorating conditions. In light of the current weather and road challenges, drivers are being strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel.

Those who must drive are urged to take extreme caution and follow these safety guidelines:

Before Driving:

  • ❄️ Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle, including windows, mirrors, headlights, and taillights.

  • 💡 Turn on headlights to improve visibility for yourself and others.

  • 🌐 Check road conditions at www.511on.ca before heading out.

  • Expect delays due to towing operations currently underway throughout the region.

While on the Road:

  • 🐢 Slow down and increase your following distance.

  • 🚫 Avoid sudden manoeuvres such as quick braking, lane changes, or acceleration.

  • Do not use cruise control on icy or snowy roads.

  • ⚠️ Use extra caution on steep hills, where traction can be extremely limited.

Emergency Vehicle Safety:

  • 🚓 Reduce speed immediately when approaching emergency vehicles with lights activated.

  • ↔️ Move over when safe and proceed with caution.

  • 🛑 Obey instructions from officers, road crews, and all traffic control signs.

  • 🔁 Be prepared to stop when approaching an emergency scene.

The Kenora OPP will continue to monitor conditions closely and is responding to incidents as safely as possible.

Motorists are asked to remain patient, drive responsibly, and help ensure road safety for all travellers.
