Icy Conditions Driving Spike in Collisions and Disabled Vehicles

KENORA, ON — Kenora OPP are urging motorists to use extreme caution as road conditions throughout the Kenora area and along Highway 17 are reported to be extremely icy and slippery.

Police say officers are responding to a high number of collisions and disabled vehicles, as blowing snow and freezing temperatures continue to create hazardous driving conditions.

Travel Advisory and What Drivers Should Do Now

Drivers are being asked to slow down, increase following distance, and drive to the conditions. OPP advise that non-essential travel is not recommended at this time.

Motorists are also reminded to:

  • Clear all snow and ice from windows, lights, mirrors, and the roof before driving

  • Use headlights so you can see and be seen

  • Check Ontario 511 for current road and traffic updates before travelling

Around Emergency Scenes: Slow Down and Move Over

Kenora OPP remind drivers to take extra care near emergency scenes:

  • Reduce speed immediately when approaching emergency vehicles with lights activated

  • Move over when safe and proceed with caution

  • If officers are directing traffic outside their vehicles, follow their instructions

  • Approach all emergency scenes slowly and be prepared to stop

  • Watch for ongoing updates on OPP social media regarding highway conditions and incidents

Winter Driving Tips for Slippery Roads

When roads are icy, small choices make a big difference:

  • Avoid cruise control on snow- or ice-covered roads

  • Brake and accelerate gently—sudden moves can cause skids

  • Leave extra space (more than usual) between you and the vehicle ahead

  • Slow down before hills and curves; avoid hard braking mid-hill

  • If you begin to slide, ease off the accelerator and steer smoothly where you want to go

OPP note some areas in the Kenora region include steep inclines and declines that can become especially dangerous when icy.

Police Continue Monitoring Conditions

Kenora OPP say they will continue to monitor conditions and respond to incidents as safely as possible. Motorists are asked to use caution and help keep roads safe for everyone.
