Dryden & Vermilion Bay: Brisk Breezes, Bright Skies, and a Flurry or Two
When your breath freezes mid-air but the sun still insists on shining — welcome to December in Dryden!

A Frosty Morning with a Sunny Disposition

THUNDER BAY – WEATHER DESK – Good morning to everyone in Dryden and Vermilion Bay, where the temperature at 5:00 AM CST clocked in at a teeth-chattering -22.3°C. With a dew point of -24.7°C and humidity at 81%, it’s the kind of morning that turns your eyelashes into icicles if you blink too slowly.

The winds are out of the west at 17 km/h, pushing the wind chill down to a frigid -33°C — definitely a “two scarves” kind of day.

Despite the brutal chill, skies are mainly clear with a stellar visibility of 16 km — so at least you can see the cold coming! The barometric pressure is at 101.2 kPa, holding steady as today unfolds.

The forecast calls for a 30% chance of flurries early this morning, but skies are expected to clear as the day progresses, leaving us with plenty of sunshine. Winds could ease slightly, staying up to 15 km/h, while the afternoon high climbs to -15°C — which, yes, still counts as progress. Wind chills will ease from -27°C this morning to a somewhat less shocking -19°C this afternoon.

Tonight and Sunday: Crystal Skies and Cold Comfort

Tonight’s forecast is partly cloudy, becoming clear by morning, and with a low of -23°C, it’s shaping up to be another classic Northwestern Ontario deep freeze. Expect a wind chill of -30°C, and yes, that brings a risk of frostbite — mittens on, always.

Sunday is your reward for surviving today: sunny skies, calm winds (up to 15 km/h), and another high around -15°C. The morning wind chill, however, plunges again to -31°C, only warming to about -19°C in the afternoon. Sunday night brings increasing cloudiness and a low near -22°C, as the next batch of light snow begins its approach.

Outlook: Snow Chances and Milder Dips

Monday features cloudy skies with a 30% chance of flurries, and the mercury nudges a little higher to -11°C for a daytime high. Monday night offers a 40% chance of snow with a low near -18°C. Tuesday through Friday stays consistently cold, with a mix of sun, cloud, and continued light snow chances.

What to Wear?

It’s frostbite territory out there, so layer like a lasagna: thermal base, fleece mid-layer, and an insulated parka. Don’t even think about skipping a hat, scarf, or wind-proof mitts. On sunny days, add sunglasses — because snow glare is real, and no one wants snow-blindness while walking the dog.

Weather Trivia Time!

Did you know that Dryden is the smallest city in Ontario by population — but punches way above its weight in weather toughness? With winter wind chills like this, Dryden folks know their parkas from their puffers.
