THUNDER BAY – LOCAL NEWS – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) responded to a structural fire on Machar Avenue at approximately 4:45 p.m., September 29.
The first-arriving truck found significant smoke showing and upgraded to a second alarm.
Crews stretched a hoseline into the main floor and executed a successful interior attack on a bedroom fire, preventing spread to the rest of the home.
In total, six Pumpers, one Aerial Ladder, and the Command Vehicle attended. TBFR reminds residents to maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home.
Fire Prevention Tips for Your Home

Alarms save lives: Install smoke alarms on every level and outside each sleeping area, and CO alarms near sleeping areas. Test monthly, replace batteries as needed, and replace smoke alarms every 10 years (CO alarms per manufacturer).

Shut the door at night: Sleeping with bedroom doors closed can slow smoke and fire spread, buying critical time.

Cooking safety: Stay in the kitchen when frying, keep a lid nearby to smother small pan fires, and keep combustibles (towels, packaging) away from elements.

Heating & space heaters: Keep 1 metre (3 feet) clear around heaters and fireplaces; use only CSA/UL-certifieddevices; never use extension cords for space heaters.

Electrical checks: Avoid overloaded power bars, replace damaged cords, and plug major appliances directly into wall outlets.

Dryers & vents: Clean the lint trap every load and the vent duct regularly.

Candles & smoking materials: Use sturdy holders, keep away from anything that can burn, fully douse cigarette butts (water/sand), and never smoke in bed.

Clear exits & address numbers: Keep hallways and stairs uncluttered and ensure your house number is visiblefor first responders.

Have an escape plan: Identify two ways out of each room, pick an outside meeting place, and practice with everyone in the household.
