A Dog’s-Eye View on Caring for Your Furry Best Friend
THUNDER BAY – NATIONAL DOG DAY — Hello friends! It’s me, Behzhig the Intrepid German Shepherd, reporting in for National Dog Day. While today is all about celebrating the bond between humans and their canine companions, I thought I’d use my paws on the keyboard to share something extra important: making sure your four-legged friend has the essentials — good food, clean water, and plenty of exercise.
Water: Our Lifeline in Every Season
Dogs like me can’t tell you when we’re thirsty the way humans do. By the time you notice us panting, we might already be a bit dehydrated. Fresh, clean water should always be available — especially in the summer or after a big play session.
Just imagine wearing a fur coat year-round (which I do!) and then chasing a ball for 20 minutes. Believe me, we need that water bowl full!
Tip: Check your dog’s bowl several times a day. And please — no algae-filled backyard buckets. We deserve fresh refills, too.
Food: Fuel for Adventure
The right nutrition keeps us strong, sharp, and ready for anything — whether it’s guarding the yard, running a trail, or curling up at your feet. A balanced diet with the right proteins, fats, and nutrients is like my secret weapon for staying “intrepid.”
It’s not just about filling our bellies; it’s about quality food in the right amounts. Too much junk (or too many table scraps) can slow us down, while too little leaves us without the energy to be our best selves.
Tip: Ask your vet what diet is best for your pup’s breed, size, and age. What works for me — a hardworking German Shepherd — might not suit a tiny Dachshund or a laid-back Bulldog.
Exercise: Not Just for Fun
For us dogs, exercise is everything. It keeps our bodies fit, our minds sharp, and our tails wagging. Without enough physical activity, dogs can become anxious, bored, or even destructive.
For me, a long run, a good game of fetch, or some agility training makes my day. But every dog is different. Some need marathon-level activity, while others just need daily walks and short bursts of play.
Tip: Make exercise part of your dog’s routine. It’s good for both of you — and it strengthens the bond we share.
Why It Matters
When you give us proper water, food, and exercise, you’re not just taking care of our bodies — you’re showing us love in the best way possible. We give you our loyalty, protection, and companionship. In return, all we ask is to be cared for with the basics we need to thrive.
So, on National Dog Day, while we appreciate the treats, toys, and extra cuddles, remember: the best gift you can give your pup is a healthy, balanced life.
Signed with a wag,
🐾 Behzhig the Intrepid German Shepherd
