Thunder Bay Weather: Mild October Temperatures, Clearing Skies and Sunshine Ahead for Northwestern Ontario

Three-Day Forecast: October 21–23, 2026

THUNDER BAY, ON — Weather Desk –  Northwestern Ontario is enjoying a stretch of relatively mild autumn weather, with daytime temperatures remaining well above seasonal averages through Friday.

Thunder Bay residents can expect clouds to give way to brighter skies Wednesday afternoon, followed by sunshine Thursday and Friday. Daytime temperatures should reach between 14°C and 16°C, making this a pleasant late-October period for outdoor work, walking and preparing homes for winter.

However, temperatures will drop sharply overnight, and patches of fog could develop in some areas. Motorists travelling early in the morning should be prepared for changing visibility.

Thunder Bay Three-Day Forecast

Wednesday, October 21 — Cloudy Morning, Brighter Afternoon

Thunder Bay starts Wednesday under mainly cloudy skies, but conditions are expected to improve later in the day. Environment Canada is forecasting clearing late in the afternoon, with a high of 15°C.

The UV index will be 2, or low.

Wednesday night should be clear, with temperatures dropping to 2°C. Fog patches are expected to develop overnight, particularly in low-lying areas.

Thursday, October 22 — Sunshine Returns

Thursday promises to be a fine autumn day for Thunder Bay and neighbouring communities.

Sunny skies are forecast, with an afternoon high of 14°C. That is about five degrees above the normal daytime high for this time of year.

Thursday night will remain clear, with an overnight low of 7°C.

Friday, October 23 — Another Mild Day

Friday will bring another welcome day of sunshine, with temperatures climbing to 16°C.

The mild weather will provide favourable conditions for outdoor construction, fall yard cleanup and recreational activities.

Clouds are expected to move back into the region Friday night, with an overnight low of 9°C. The outlook suggests a 30 per cent chance of showers on Saturday.

Regional Forecast — Surrounding Communities

Communities across the North Shore of Lake Superior and inland areas can expect a similar pattern of mild afternoons and chilly nights. There may be some localized showers Wednesday, especially east of Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay 15°C 14°C 16°C
Nipigon 16°C 13°C 14°C
Lake Nipigon area 14°C 14°C 16°C
Atikokan 18°C 17°C 20°C
Marathon 14°C 12°C 13°C

Kakabeka Falls, Murillo and Oliver Paipoonge

Communities west of Thunder Bay should experience much the same weather pattern as the city, although inland locations can cool more quickly after sunset.

Residents should be prepared for possible overnight fog Wednesday and chilly early-morning temperatures Thursday. Thursday and Friday look favourable for outdoor work and travel.

Nipigon, Red Rock and Dorion

Nipigon and nearby communities are looking at temperatures reaching approximately 16°C Wednesday. Variable cloud cover and the possibility of an afternoon shower are forecast.

Thursday will bring sunny to partly cloudy skies and a high near 13°C, followed by partial sunshine and a high of 14°C Friday.

Wednesday night’s temperatures may fall to around -1°C, bringing the possibility of frost in colder locations.

Atikokan and the Western Communities

Atikokan is expected to be among the warmer regional communities, with a high near 18°C Wednesday, 17°C Thursday and potentially 20°C Friday.

Skies should be partly sunny through much of the period. Temperatures could dip slightly below freezing Wednesday night, so residents should not assume that mild daytime weather means frost-free mornings.

Marathon and the North Shore

Marathon can expect a high near 14°C Wednesday, with a possibility of isolated afternoon showers.

Conditions should improve Thursday with partial sunshine and a high near 12°C. Friday’s forecast calls for intervals of cloud and sun, reaching approximately 13°C.

Communities close to Lake Superior should also remember that lake breezes can make outdoor conditions feel cooler than the reported temperature.

Travel Outlook: Highway 11/17 and Rural Roads

For travellers heading along Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay, Nipigon and Marathon, the main weather considerations are changing visibility, possible localized showers Wednesday and colder overnight temperatures.

Fog can form in low-lying sections of road and near waterways, particularly during the early morning. Drivers heading toward Kakabeka Falls, Dorion and rural areas should allow extra time when visibility is reduced.

No major winter storm is indicated in the three-day forecast reviewed. However, this is not a live road-condition report. Check Ontario 511 before travelling for current closures, incidents and road conditions.

What to Wear: Autumn Layers Are Still Essential

A light jacket or sweater should be comfortable for most daytime activities, especially during the sunnier hours Thursday and Friday. Warmer outerwear will be useful for people leaving home early or working after sunset.

For residents preparing properties for winter, the next few days offer a good opportunity to finish outdoor chores. Colder overnight temperatures remain possible, particularly outside the city.

Weather Trivia: Why Thunder Bay Can Have Such Different Temperatures

Lake Superior has an important influence on Thunder Bay’s weather. Because water warms and cools more slowly than land, the lake can moderate temperatures close to shore.

During autumn, warmer lake water can help keep nearby locations milder overnight, while inland communities may cool rapidly under clear skies.

This is one reason temperatures in Thunder Bay can differ noticeably from those in Kakabeka Falls, Murillo and rural areas just a short distance away.

Looking Ahead to the Weekend

Environment Canada is forecasting a high near 18°C in Thunder Bay on Saturday, October 24, although clouds and a 30 per cent chance of showers could interrupt the mild conditions.

Sunday is expected to be cooler, with a high near 12°C, followed by a further decline toward 7°C on Monday.

That suggests the current stretch of above-seasonal temperatures may not last much beyond the weekend.
