Public urged to shelter in place; OPP and Anishinabek Police respond to active threat

GINOOGAMING FIRST NATION – PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT – As of 5:55 AM EDT, authorities are responding to an active and dangerous situation in Ginoogaming First Nation, where two armed individuals remain at large, prompting an urgent shelter-in-place advisory for residents in the area.

Members of the Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), alongside officers from the Anishinabek Police Service, are currently on scene and actively investigating.


Public Safety Instructions

Residents in the affected area are strongly advised to take immediate precautions:

  • If you are outdoors: Seek immediate shelter inside a secure building or location.

  • If you are indoors: Lock all doors and windows. Remain inside until police provide further instructions.

  • If driving: Continue directly to your destination. Do not stop unnecessarily. Lock your vehicle once you arrive.

  • Avoid engaging with anyone suspicious. If you see or encounter the suspects, do not approach — instead, call 9-1-1 immediately.

  • Close curtains or blinds to avoid drawing attention to yourself or your family.

  • Follow all directions from police on scene.

Motorists travelling along Highway 11 in the Longlac and Ginoogaming First Nation area are specifically advised not to pick up hitchhikers, as a critical safety precaution.

“We understand the emotional toll a shelter-in-place order can have on the community,” the OPP said in a statement. “Officers are taking every precaution necessary to ensure public safety while working diligently to locate and apprehend the individuals involved.”

Increased Police Presence Expected

A large police presence will be visible in the community and along surrounding roadways as the investigation continues. Residents outside the affected area are urged to avoid travelling into Ginoogaming First Nation until further notice.
