Wasaho Cree Nation – National Indigenous – On behalf of our entire community, I extend our deepest thanks to the volunteers, supporters, and friends who came together in the search for our brother, the late Steffen Sjkjottelvik (“Norway Man”). The search has now concluded. While the outcome was not what we had prayed and hoped for, Steffen’s remains have been found, allowing us to bring him to rest with dignity.
We are profoundly grateful to every volunteer who walked the land, to Wiskair Helicopters for providing essential fuel transport, and to the many members, friends, and allies who gave their time, strength, and prayers. We especially acknowledge the generosity of nearly two hundred donors who contributed financially, both large and small. Each gift made this effort possible, and every gesture of kindness was felt by our people. In total, $360,046.99 was raised for the search, including contributions from Steffen’s family and supporters in Norway.
We recognize the courage and commitment of the lead searchers: Angus Miles, David Matthews, Nathan Howson, George Miles, Andrew Thomas, and Wayne Matthews, along with the full search team. At great personal risk, they tracked Steffen’s steps across dangerous and unpredictable terrain until the search was completed.
We also thank the York Landing and Peawanuck First Nations for their willingness to assist, and acknowledge the support and encouragement of NAN Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, the Honourable Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong), and the Honourable Greg Rickford (Kenora–Rainy River).
“Those of you who carried this responsibility on behalf of us all—your efforts will never be forgotten,” said Chief Kakekaspan. “Although we hoped to welcome Steffen Sjkjottelvik home safely, his spirit has brought our people together in a way we have not seen in many years. Steffen’s life and story will remain part of our history and in our thoughts. He is with the ancestors now, and he will continue to walk the Land with us. On behalf of our Council, our Elders, and our families, thank you.”
