Emergency crews on scene; OPP advises motorists to avoid the area until further notice

DRYDEN – NEWS – A transport truck fire has led to the full closure of Highway 17 in both directions near Vermilion Bay, causing traffic disruptions across Northwestern Ontario. The fire occurred early Friday afternoon on Waldhof Road South, adjacent to the highway.

Ontario 511 first reported the incident at approximately 1:00 p.m. on July 5. As of now, all lanes remain closed while emergency crews and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) manage the situation.

There is no estimated time for reopening, and drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes where possible.

This closure significantly impacts east-west travel in the region, particularly for transport and commercial traffic using Highway 17 — a critical artery connecting Thunder Bay to Manitoba and other parts of Northwestern Ontario.
