NIPIGON, ON – June 4, 2025 – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from the Nipigon Detachment have laid impaired driving charges against a Red Rock Township resident in connection with a snowmobile collision that occurred earlier this year.
The incident took place on February 5, 2025, just before 10:00 p.m., when Red Rock Emergency Medical Services (EMS) reported a snowmobile crash near Sprucewood Road in Lyon Township. Nipigon OPP officers responded to the scene and followed EMS to Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, where the 22-year-old driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Hospital staff drew blood from the driver as part of the ongoing investigation. A judicial warrant was later obtained to authorize analysis of the blood sample, which was sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences for toxicology testing. Results confirmed the presence of alcohol in the driver’s system at the time of the collision.
As a result of the investigation, Mackenzie FOWLER, 22, of Red Rock Township, has been charged under the Criminal Code with the following offences:
-
Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs (Section 320.14(1)(a))
-
Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration Over 80 (Section 320.14(1)(b))
Fowler has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon at a future date.
OPP: Impaired Driving Enforcement Remains a Priority
The OPP continues to stress the dangers of impaired operation of any motor vehicle, including off-road and snowmobiles. Officers remain dedicated to removing alcohol and drug-impaired drivers from roadways and trails across Ontario.
“If you suspect someone is operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs, call 9-1-1 immediately,” the OPP urges. “Your call could save a life.”
