Wheel-Trans Riders Can Use Old Fares Until Year-End

TORONTO – May 29, 2025 – The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is reminding riders that Sunday, June 1, 2025, will be the final day that tickets, tokens, and day passes—referred to as legacy fare media—will be accepted as valid fare payment on TTC buses, streetcars, and subways.

After this date, all riders must use a PRESTO Card, PRESTO Ticket, or a debit/credit card (including those stored in Apple Pay or Google Wallet) to board.

Legacy Fares Officially Retired

The TTC began phasing out legacy fare media in 2019, discontinuing their sale at subway stations. With fewer than 1% of riders still using these older fare options, the move to fully digital and card-based payment systems is the final step in the TTC’s modernization plan.

⚠️ Important Note: There will be no refunds, exchanges, or credits issued for unused legacy fare media.

Wheel-Trans Riders Get Extra Time

Wheel-Trans customers—who use specialized transit services for mobility and accessibility—will still be permitted to use tickets, tokens, and day passes until December 31, 2025, giving them additional time to transition.

Cash Still Has Limited Use

While legacy fare media is ending, cash is still accepted:

  • To buy PRESTO Cards and Tickets at Fare Vending Machines in subway stations

  • Directly on buses and streetcars, though exact fare is required and no change is given

Free PRESTO Cards Available at Libraries

As part of an equity initiative, select Toronto Public Library branches are offering free PRESTO cards while supplies last. This helps support low-income residents in adapting to the new fare system.
