THUNDER BAY – THUNDERWOLVES SPORTS — It’s official, folks. After two seasons at the helm of Lakehead University’s women’s basketball squad, Head Coach Hugo Boisvert is stepping away from the hardwood and onto a new path, accepting a professional opportunity that brings him closer to family and home.

Boisvert, who took the reins in 2023 during a pivotal rebuilding phase, has been a steady hand for the Thunderwolves, guiding the team through a culture reset and laying the groundwork for a new era of excellence, unity, and student-athlete support.

“It’s been a tough call,” said Boisvert, reflecting on his decision to move on. “Lakehead, this community, these student-athletes—they’ve meant the world to me. But sometimes life throws you an opportunity that just feels right, and this was one of those moments.”

The respected coach leaves behind a program on the rise, one now firmly rooted in the values of trust, accountability, and student-athlete well-being. Since his arrival, Boisvert has worked alongside players and staff to rebuild the culture brick by brick, ensuring a safe, energized, and united locker room.

Lakehead Athletics Director Tom Warden tipped his cap to Boisvert’s leadership:
“Hugo’s legacy is the solid foundation he’s built for this program. He’s been a mentor, a leader, and above all, someone who truly cared about our student-athletes. We thank him for everything and wish him nothing but success in his next chapter.”

Next Up: The Search Is On!

But make no mistake, Thunderwolves fans—the journey continues. Lakehead Athletics is hitting the recruiting trail hard, launching a nationwide search for the next head coach. The university is pulling out all the stops, working hand-in-hand with Human Resources, student-athletes, alumni, and key voices in the community to ensure the right leader is found to take the women’s program to the next level.

“We’re proud of how far the team has come,” added Warden. “Now it’s about finding a coach who will build on that momentum, someone who will bring passion, integrity, and drive to our court.”

Student-athletes will play an active role in the selection process—a sign of the Thunderwolves’ commitment to an inclusive, transparent, and student-centered approach.

Thunderwolves Future: Still Roaring

Boisvert may be moving on, but his impact remains stitched into the fabric of Lakehead’s women’s basketball program. The Thunderwolves remain focused, united, and hungry to build on their foundation of respect, hard work, and excellence.
