BUFFALO, N.Y. — NHL great Eric Staal is returning to the Buffalo Sabres, this time off the ice. The 40-year-old Thunder Bay native has been named special assistant to general manager Kevyn Adams, the club announced Wednesday. Staal will work directly with Adams and contribute to multiple areas of hockey operations, including scouting, player development, and organizational strategy.

NHL Legend Transitions to Executive Role in Buffalo

Staal retired from professional hockey on August 8, 2024, after an 18-season career that included over 1,000 points, a Stanley Cup title, and Olympic gold. With his move into a front-office role, Staal becomes one of the latest high-profile former players to bring on-ice experience into NHL management.

“I have such a passion for the game and a deep love for everything about hockey,” Staal told the Sabres’ official site. “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to being part of Buffalo’s future.”

His connection to the Sabres is not new. Staal played 32 games for Buffalo during the shortened 2020-21 season, recording 10 points. Though brief, the experience left a lasting impression.

“Buffalo is a special place and a true sports town,” he said. “It’s exciting to be back in this capacity.”

Staal and Adams Reunite After Championship Past

Staal’s relationship with Kevyn Adams dates back to their days as teammates with the Carolina Hurricanes, where they were part of the 2006 Stanley Cup-winning team. That bond played a key role in bringing Staal into the Sabres’ executive fold.

“When I began looking at ways to strengthen our hockey operations group, Eric was one of the first names I considered,” said Adams. “His career speaks for itself—he’s won at every level. His perspective and leadership will be invaluable as we take the next step as an organization.”

Adams emphasized the desire to bring fresh voices into the front office while maintaining ties to proven success. Staal, who captained the Hurricanes for seven seasons and ranks as their all-time leader in goals, assists, and points since the franchise’s move to Raleigh, fits that mold perfectly.

Thunder Bay’s Hockey Icon Brings Leadership and Insight to Sabres’ Future

For fans in Northwestern Ontario, Staal’s new role is more than a headline—it’s a source of pride. As one of Thunder Bay’s most accomplished hockey exports, his continued involvement in the NHL underscores the community’s deep roots in the game.

Staal’s impressive resume includes 1,063 points (455 goals, 608 assists) in 1,365 NHL games with six franchises: Carolina, the New York Rangers, Minnesota, Buffalo, Montreal, and Florida. His playoff totals—64 points in 104 games—highlight his impact in high-pressure moments.

In 2023, he wrapped up his playing days with the Florida Panthers, contributing to their playoff run with five points in 21 games. Earlier this year, the Hurricanes retired his No. 12 jersey in honor of his legacy.

As the Sabres aim to break a 14-year playoff drought, Staal’s championship experience and hockey IQ could help shape a turnaround.

“I’ve been fortunate to be part of great teams throughout my career,” he said. “Now I’m excited to use what I’ve learned to help guide the next generation.”
