MARATHON, ON – May 6, 2025 – The Marathon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is actively investigating two concerning incidents involving the discovery of commercial explosives in residential neighbourhoods in the Town of Marathon.

Two Separate Explosive Discoveries Raise Public Concern

The first incident occurred on March 4, 2025, when OPP officers responded to a report of explosives discovered inside a residence on McLeod Drive. The OPP’s specialized Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was deployed to the scene, where the materials were safely removed without incident.

The second incident took place on May 3, 2025, after commercial explosives were located near a home on Hemlo Drive. Once again, the EDU team attended and safely removed the materials.

In both instances, the explosives were identified as products manufactured by Orica Canada Inc., a commercial supplier of blasting materials commonly used in mining and construction.

No Immediate Threat, But Investigations Continue

The OPP has confirmed there is no current threat to public safety, but both investigations remain active and ongoing.

“The safe recovery of these materials is a priority, and we’re asking the public for any information that could assist in our investigation,” said a spokesperson for the Marathon OPP. “Even small details could be vital in understanding how these explosives ended up in residential areas.”
