THUNDER BAY, ON — April 4, 2025 — As communities in Southern Ontario grapple with the aftermath of last week’s devastating ice storm, Thunder Bay-based TIL-KA Construction DKI has mobilized its disaster response team to the Orillia region, delivering critical support and services where they are needed most.
TIL-KA DKI Responds with Disaster Recovery Expertise
In the early hours of April 2, the TIL-KA DKI team departed Thunder Bay, travelling through extreme weather conditions to reach affected communities. Specializing in disaster recovery, structural repair, and emergency mitigation, the company is on the ground providing damage assessments, clearing hazardous debris, and supporting homeowners whose properties have suffered structural and flood-related damage.
“From the moment we got the call, we were packed and on the road,” said a spokesperson for TIL-KA DKI. “This is what we do. Our job is to bring relief and resilience to communities in crisis.”
The storm, which struck on March 30–31, brought freezing rain, snow squalls, high winds of up to 70 km/h, and thunderstorm activity—an extremely rare and hazardous mix for early spring. According to Environment Canada, the system deposited up to 25 mm of ice accumulation in some regions, bringing down hundreds of trees and power lines, and triggering widespread power outages that left over 275,000 customers without electricity at the storm’s peak.
Severe Ice Storm Causes Widespread Disruption
The impact on infrastructure has been severe. Road closures, broken water mains, and downed telecommunications networks have created ongoing challenges for residents and first responders. In Orillia and surrounding Simcoe County, emergency shelters were opened, while crews struggled to access isolated properties in rural areas.
The Ontario Provincial Police and local hydro companies issued warnings about live wires and unstable trees, and many municipalities declared states of emergency as they coordinated cleanup efforts.
Ongoing Recovery Efforts Focus on Power, Water, and Infrastructure
Recovery is expected to take weeks. Local hydro authorities estimate that full restoration of the power grid could extend into mid-April for hard-hit rural communities. Meanwhile, emergency services are still working to restore potable water and ensure access to telecommunications, which are vital for coordinating relief.
TIL-KA DKI’s efforts in clearing roadways and accessing flooded homes are crucial to helping residents return safely to their properties.
Northwestern Ontario’s Role in Southern Ontario’s Emergency Response
TIL-KA DKI’s rapid deployment underscores Thunder Bay’s capacity to contribute to provincial-level emergency efforts. With the increasing frequency and severity of weather-related disasters in Ontario, coordination between regional companies and municipalities is more important than ever.
As climate change continues to impact weather patterns across Canada, disaster response companies like TIL-KA DKI will play a pivotal role in provincial resilience, ensuring that both urban and rural communities can recover from events like last week’s ice storm.
