Royal Canadian Mint Issues first coins with King Charles III

WINNIPEG – NEWS – The Royal Canadian Mint has introduced a new chapter in Canadian numismatics by striking the first Canadian circulation coin featuring the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The unveiling of the 2023-dated $1 circulation coin marks the first change in the monarch’s portrait on Canadian coins in 70 years, following the reign of Queen Elizabeth II from 1953 to 2023.

The coin’s contemporary portrait of King Charles III is the creation of Canadian artist Steven Rosati, who also attended the ceremony.

Marie Lemay, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, expressed pride in continuing a long-standing Canadian tradition. “Since 1908, the Mint has featured the reigning monarch on Canadian coins. The inclusion of King Charles III’s effigy is a historic milestone for us, achieved through the collective efforts of our dedicated employees,” Lemay stated.

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, highlighted the importance of the royal effigy as a Canadian symbol.

“Steven Rosati’s portrait honours His Majesty and marks this significant occasion in Canadian history,” Freeland noted.

The process to design the new coin began following the Government of Canada’s announcement on May 6, with the Mint inviting experienced coin designers and engravers to propose a unique Canadian portrayal of the new monarch. Montreal-based Steven Rosati emerged victorious among many talented artists.

Rosati, expressing his gratitude and excitement, said, “Being chosen to design King Charles III’s effigy for this prestigious moment in Canadian coin history is an honour and a source of great pride.”

Rosati is the third Canadian artist since 1990 to design a royal effigy for the nation’s coinage, following Dora de Pédery-Hunt and Susanna Blunt.

The Mint plans to release a limited volume of coins across all denominations by December through public coin exchanges and the national coin management system. This December will also see the introduction of His Majesty’s effigy on bullion and numismatic coins.

Commemorative products celebrating this milestone include the 2023 Classic Uncirculated Set – First Strikes, the 2023 Special Wrap Roll Collection – First Strikes, and the 2023 50-Cent Special Wrap Circulation Roll.
