Fire in Peawanuck Causes $3 Million in Damages to Public Works Garage

PEAWANUCK – Two investigators and a forensic engineer with the Office of the Fire Marshal travelled to Peawanuck to assist the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service and band council with a fire investigation in their community.

The fire occurred in the public works garage that housed heavy equipment for clearing snow. The approximate total loss to the property and equipment is estimated to exceed $3 million.

The on-scene examination has been completed and the investigation into the origin, cause and circumstances of the fire continues.
