Highway Reopened for Travel

Highway Remains Closed as of 4:30 PM EDT

IGNACE – On August 20, 2020, at approximately 2:30 am officers from the Ignace and Dryden Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, Dewan Township, approximately 15 km East of Ignace.

Three tractor-trailer units (TTU); two travelling west and one travelling east collided. Two occupants of one of the Westbound units were pronounced deceased. The occupants of the other west and eastbound tractor-trailer units had serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by EMS for treatment.

The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin (NOK).

Ignace Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were on scene to assist with the investigation.

The Traffic Collision Investigation (TCI) unit, including a reconstructionist, attended the scene to conduct their investigation. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Highway 17 is still closed at this time.
