Thunderwolves fall 4-1 to Guelph Gryphons on opening night

THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead Thunderwolves fall 4-1 to the Guelph Gryphons on opening night.

Third-year forward, Cooper Leitch, scored the lone Thunderwolves goal halfway through the first period. Freshman forward Greg Smith earned his first assist with the Thunderwolves on Leitch’s goal, with Tomas Soustal claiming the second assist.

Not long after the Thunderwolves goal, Zachary Poirier would tie the game for the Gryphons.

The second period was kept scoreless by Thunderwolves goaltender Nic Renyard and Guelph netminder Andrew Masters.

Ted Nichol, Ryan Da Silva, and Giordano Finoro would each score for Guelph in the third to claim the first of two games.

“It was a full effort in our first game,” said Thunderwolves Head Coach Andrew Wilkins. “I was encouraged with the execution of our structure at times, resulting in scoring opportunities. We’ve got lots to learn and correct.”

The Thunderwolves will look to bounce back in game two at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday, September 28th at 7:00 pm.
