THUNDER BAY – Day STARTER – Good Morning Thunder (and yes we lived up to our name) Bay last night. There could be more of the same today.

Environment Canada says for Thunder Bay, we can expect mainly cloudy conditions with a 40 percent chance of showers and risk of a thunderstorm. Fog patches will dissipate this morning. Friday’s high is forecast for 21. The UV index will be 6 or high.

What Do You Need to Know?

Edward Street North Bound is currently closed due to construction between Churchill Drive and Riverview Drive.

This closure is clearly marked, so as a vehicle operator you will need to find an alternative route around the closure.

The incorrect choice is to proceed in the South Bound lane of traffic, travelling in the wrong direction.

Police will be strickly enforcing this dangerous driving habit, issuing offence notices.

The political campaign could be undergoing some very significant shifting right now as polls are showing a surging New Democratic Party as voter intentions for the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives appear to have dropped. This is a developing story and we will have more coverage on it through the day and into the weekend.

Where are the Leaders?

9:45 a.m.               Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath makes an announcement at Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute, 5400 Lawrence Ave. E, Scarborough, ON.

National Public Works Week

Residents are invited to celebrate National Public Works Week at a free open house that will highlight and celebrate the work public servants do to keep our city running.

The open house for residents will take place on Saturday, May 26, from 11 am – 2 pm at the Mountdale Public Works Yard, 410 Mountdale Ave. The open house will feature:

  • Vehicle displays of a garbage truck, snow plow, tree truck, excavator, front-end loader, the new Python 5000, and more!
  • Hotdogs and hamburgers
  • Music
  • Kids activities
  • Chances to win great prizes

National Public Works Week takes place May 20 – 26, 2018, and is recognized across North America as an opportunity to educate residents about public works and celebrate the work these professionals provide.

“Public works professionals work hard to provide and maintain essential public services. They are often the hidden heroes of winter storm and rainfall events, and they work hard behind the scenes to deliver high-quality drinking water, to name a few,” said Kerri Marshall, General Manager – Infrastructure & Operations. “Our community depends on our public works professionals, who are always there and always ready.”

National Public Works Week is a great way to showcase the work these individuals do for our community as well as thank them for their dedication.  Please join us in recognizing their work.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.

“We’re happy to again offer free compost to all residents,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “Leaf and yard waste that’s picked up during our curbside collection programs is blended with organic waste and is ideal for use in landscaping, flower beds and lawns. It’s not suitable for vegetable gardens.”

Residents bringing garbage, recycling and/or hazardous household waste are reminded to dispose of these items at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road first before visiting the special compost pick-up area. Residents are also advised to bring a shovel and some bags or containers to carry compost home. Quantities are limited to a maximum of one half-ton load per resident.
