THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Kings will have two teams on the road this weekend competing against provincial competition.

The peewee Kings are off to Orillia to take part in the Ontario Winter Games while the minor midgets head to Sault Ste. Marie to skate in the inaugural Northern Ontario Cup.

A trio of round-robin contests await the peewees beginning with a pair of games Friday with them taking on the Sun County Panthers from Windsor at 8 a.m. before meeting the Ottawa 67’s at 6 p.m.

They will then tangle with the Nickel City Sons from Sudbury at noon on Saturday.

A total of eight AAA peewee teams from across the province are taking part with the top two clubs in each division moving on to semifinal play Saturday night.

Those four clubs will then vie for medals on Sunday.

As for Thunder Bay’s minor midgets, their initial match-up goes Friday as they take on the host Soo Thunderbirds at noon.

Two more tilts await the Kings Saturday beginning with a 12 p.m. encounter vs. the North Bay Trappers followed by a 7 p.m. meeting against the Sudbury Wolves.

Sunday has the No. 1 seed meeting the No. 4 squad and No. 2 facing off with No. 3 in the semifinals.

The two winners there will then vie for the Northern Ontario Cup later in the day while the other two teams will play for bronze.
