Lakehead TWolves Drop Opening Game

WINNIPEG – SPORTS – The Lakehead men’s basketball team lost their first game of the Wesmen Classic earlier today 79-77 to the University of Alberta.

The undefeated Alberta came out strong at the beginning of the game with a 10-point lead after the first quarter, 27-17. By half, the Thunderwolves were down 44-32.

Lakehead hustled in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Bears 25-14, putting themselves down only 1 at 58-57 by the end of the quarter.

At the end of the fourth, Alex Robichaud drained a three pointer with 12 seconds left in the quarter, putting the Thunderwolves up 77-76.

Golden Bears Mamadou Gueye responded back, also hitting a big three with less than 4 seconds remaining, giving Alberta their 79-77 win over the Thunderwolves.

Henry Tan led the Wolves with 16 points and Nick Burke with 12 points. Alex Robichaud had 12 points, 8 rebounds.

Coach Furtado says, “Our guys keep battling and fighting until the end of each game which is great to see. We’ve had so many tight games this year but just can’t find a way to win. The importance of every possession is magnified in these close games.”

Lakehead finished the game with 10 three pointers and were 89% from the free throw line, hitting 17-19.

The Thunderwolves will take on Brandon at 12:00pm tomorrow afternoon in one consolation semi-final.
