THUNDER BAY – At 04:36AM EDT on Saturday morning, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residential fire in a multi-unit building in the 200 block of River Street.

Upon arrival light smoke could be seen throughout the building.

Tenants who had evacuated after being alerted by the smoke detectors stated that there was a fire in the basement. One tenant had discharged an extinguisher on the burning debris. The initial arriving crew made entry and quickly extinguished the remainder of the fire.

Damage was confined to the immediate area of the fire but smoke had spread throughout the building. There were no injuries as a result of the fire and it is under investigation.

A second alarm had been called immediately upon arrival as a precaution as basement fires can be very difficult to access for fire personnel. A total of 22 fire fighters were called to the scene with 5 pumpers and an aerial ladder.
