Parliament HillKENORA – POLITICS –  With the first 100 days of our mandate complete, I thought I would share some of the important steps our Government has made to start bringing real change to Canadians.

On November 4, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was sworn into office bringing with him, for the first time, a gender balanced cabinet.

In December, at our first opportunity, our Government introduced a tax cut which will put more money directly into the pockets of the middle class effective January 1, 2016. This tax cut, which lowers the personal income tax rate by 7 per cent, will benefit nine million Canadians. The middle class have gone too long without a raise and – in challenging economic times – we’re taking action to help them.

To further help the middle class, our government has introduced a bill which will help strengthen the labour movement in Canada. Our Government recognizes the important role that unions play in protecting the rights of Canadian workers and in helping the middle class grow and prosper. On February 3, I stood in the House of Commons to speak in favour of this bill. As a former union leader, I know of the important role that unions play in our country. This bill will restore a fair and balanced approach to labour relations.

Our Government has also taken steps to correct the mistakes of the previous government by committing to build the freedom road to Shoal Lake 40, reinstating the mandatory long-form census, unmuzzling scientists to allow them to share their research, saving door-to-door mail delivery, and, along with another 200 nations, pledged to take real action on climate change.

I want to stress to you, that while our Government is working hard every day to better the lives of Canadians, real change takes time.

In the months ahead, we will unveil our first budget as a government. We recognize that our country has been hit with tough economic times. In the next budget, and over the next decade, our Government will be making historic investments in infrastructure, and supporting families through the Canada Child Benefit, which will lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty.

Through programs like these, and with the hard work of Canadians from coast to coast to coast, I am confident that our Government will get our country back on track.
