THUNDER BAY – On June 5th and 6th, four local elementary students traveled to Carlton University in the Nation’s Capital, to compete at the 21st annual Provincial Math Olympics. The organizing chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education was the Carleton-Ottawa Mathematics Association (COMA).

Representing Northwestern Ontario were: Kevin Bai (Bishop E.Q. Jennings School, grade 8 boys champion), Emma Schubert (Bishop Gallagher School, grade 8 girls champion), Adam Louma (Woodcrest Public School, grade 7 boys champion) and Finnoula Prouse (Pope John Paul II School, grade 7 girls champion).

The team component was a focus of the provincial competition, giving the local foursome a chance to shine. The mathematicians participated in group, pair and individual contests. They all worked extremely hard and truly enjoyed the high level of competition that they were faced with.

Chaperoning the team for the first time was recent teacher graduate Takwana Nhau. All teachers, coaches and parents are extremely proud of the impressive accomplishments that this group has achieved on the provincial stage.
