Exciting Internship opportunities

THUNDER BAY – Journalists for Human Rights is coordinating two (2) paid internship opportunities for emerging Aboriginal reporters through their Indigenous Reporters Program.

Intern Opportunities: 1 position at APTN as a Television Technician (junior) OR Researcher/Writer (trainee)

1 position at EITHER Wawatay News OR Netnewsledger as a Junior Reporter

Location: APTN offices in either Ottawa or Winnipeg; Wawatay News and Netnewsledger offices in Thunder Bay

Number of Internships: 2 (1 at APTN, 1 at Wawatay OR Netnewsledger)

Start Date: October 20, 2014 Duration: 3 months

Description: The Television Technician (junior) (APTN) works under the supervision of the Director or Producer and provides support to the Studio Crew in the day to day production of APTN News and Current Affairs Programming while adhering to the highest journalistic standards, procedures and practices. Key responsibilities include working as a teleprompter, electronic graphics, switcher, audio, AD, studio camera operator, floor director, and editor. Also, prepping the studio prior to production, which includes lighting, camera set-up and striking the set following production.

The Researcher/Writer (trainee) (APTN) works under the direction of the Assignment Editor and gathers content for News and Current Affairs while adhering to the highest journalistic standards, procedures and practices. Key responsibilities include searching for stories; researching, developing ideas using leads/tips; pitching story ideas; interviewing sources, preparing story outlines, reviewing archives; assisting with the preparation of published stories, etc.

The Junior Reporter (Wawatay) will work with the editor to generate original story ideas and submit story lists prior to assigned story meetings. The Junior Reporter will write news and feature stories based on information gathered through personal or telephone interviews, meetings and events, and research online or other places for publication on the internet and in print newspaper. Other duties include taking photographs for publication, editing photos using Adobe Photoshop and writing cutlines; proofreading editorial copy on production day; maintaining a filing system that allows stories/content to be tracked over time; and writing stories and briefs for special projects as assigned. Some travel and evening and weekend work will be required.

The Junior Reporter (Netnewsledger) will be writing features, covering crimes, courts, inquests, breaking news, health and education stories. The Junior Reporter will also be required to take photographs and work in other multimedia departments including videography and web publication. This position requires a variety of interests in journalism including sports, city, living and business. Also, assisting in live broadcasts for website publication may be required, as well as maintaining and updating social media streams.

The APTN Winnipeg head office is a hub for national stories and community based reporting. The Winnipeg office is heavily focused on broadcast journalism.

About Wawatay News Thunder Bay: Wawatay News is a bi-weekly community print newspaper which has been published since 1974. Wawatay News is mostly distributed to First Nation communities in the remote north of Ontario and Manitoba.
