THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Thunder Bay Hydro customers are being targeted by scammers. Thunder Bay Hydro reports, “A scam that has been noted by the Better Business Bureau in the US has come to Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay Hydro has received reports from local businesses regarding phone calls from people claiming to be from the ‘termination’ department of the company. Victims are being threatened withhaving their electricity cutoff if they do not immediately provide payment in the form of a pre-paid debit card orwire transfer”.

Because utility companies do contact their customers by phone regarding past due accounts, these callers are taking advantage of the difficulty of knowing whether the callis real.

  • Should you receive a suspicious call requiring immediate payment by a pre-paid method from the “Termination Department” at Thunder Bay Hydro, advise the caller that you will call them right back at the local number (807-343-1111) to validate the call.

If local customers receive a phone call from someone demanding payment that they realize is not Thunder Bay Hydro, they should gather as many details as possible and then contact Thunder Bay Police.
