Lakehead Bounces Back to Win in Waterloo

WATERLOO – LU Sports – The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s basketball team escaped with a 76-73 win on Saturday evening over the Laurier Golden Hawks. With the win they improve to 7-13 and hold onto 5th place in the OUA West.

Needing a win badly after having dropped a 5-point decision the night previous (and three in a row overall), the Thunderwolves started the first half strong, and were able to slow down Laurier’s potent offense. Lakehead was up 47-37 at the half.
The Hawks’ offense wouldn’t stay silent forever though, and awakened in the 4th quarter, led by Will Coulthard, who scored a game-high 18 points.
Some costly turnovers late in the game put Lakehead’s back against the wall, but they would get relief from Henry Tan, who hit a clutch three pointer down the stretch, along with 2 free throws in the final 10 seconds to secure the victory. This was despite Laurier’s Max Allin getting a decent look at a three pointer as time expired.
Lakehead had 4 players score in double digits, led by Dwayne Harvey with 17 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Anthony McIntosh with 16 points. Justin Bell played an efficient game, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Alex Robichaud played the entire 40 minutes (guarding Max Allin) and scored 12 points, while limiting Allin to 16 points (7-19 FG).

Coach’s Corner – Great to see the guys come back!

Coach Matt Erdman, says, “It was great to see the guys come back tonight and translate what we discussed in film and shoot today. They made a conscious effort to be better on the defensive end – it’s tough to contain Max and Will but we got stops when we needed them. Credit to Alex Robichaud for making Max work for everything he got tonight.”
The men’s team finishes the regular season next weekend against Guelph.
