THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – Environment Canada has issued special weather statements and rainfall warnings for the Thunder Bay and Superior East regions. The weather service says that a deepening Colorado low moving into Northwestern Ontario is responsible for the rain and snow in Northern Ontario today into the weekend.

The rain will begin this morning, with the most rainfall occurring this afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 mm are expected, with higher amounts possible in embedded thunderstorms.

Update: North Star Air reports: “Due to severe weather in the northwest region of Ontario (freezing rain, snow, thunder, lightning) flights today are delayed or cancelled. The safety of our passengers is of utmost importance. We are diligently rescheduling flights as the weather clears.

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • City of Thunder Bay

The highest rainfall amounts are expected north of Lake Superior between Nipigon and Marathon, including Pays Plat, Terrace Bay and Neys where rainfall warnings are in effect.
