Rocket Lab launches JAXA’s RAISE-4 satellite, expanding international space partnerships and access
MAHIA, New Zealand – December 13, 2025 – In a milestone for international space collaboration, Rocket Lab (Nasdaq: RKLB) has successfully launched its first dedicated mission for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The “RAISE And Shine” mission lifted off from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand on December 14 at 03:09 UTC, deploying the RAISE-4 satellite, which hosts eight cutting-edge technologies developed by Japanese universities, research institutions, and private companies.
This mission marks the first of two dedicated launches for JAXA under its Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration Program, aimed at advancing Japan’s space capabilities through commercial partnerships.
Global Space Developments with Local Relevance
The success of Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket—known for its reliability and precision—signals a broader shift in global space operations. With more government agencies relying on private companies for launch services, this development could present new research and commercial opportunities for Canadian universities and aerospace firms, including those in Thunder Bay and across Northwestern Ontario.
As Canada invests more in space innovation through agencies like the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), partnerships with companies like Rocket Lab could help local students, engineers, and tech startups access low Earth orbit for research and development—particularly in remote sensing, environmental monitoring, and communications.
Rocket Lab’s Growing International Footprint
Rocket Lab CEO Sir Peter Beck emphasized the mission’s importance:
“This dedicated mission delivered precision and reliability for one of the world’s most respected space agencies… We’re proud to continue delivering the responsiveness and performance that Japan’s satellite operators have come to rely on.”
This successful mission was Rocket Lab’s 19th launch of 2025, breaking the company’s previous annual record. The next mission is expected later this month from Launch Complex 2.
With another JAXA mission and a dedicated launch for the European Space Agency (ESA) on the calendar for early 2026, Rocket Lab continues to solidify its role in shaping the global space economy.
