Bitter Morning Cold Eases (Slightly), but Flurries Lurk Tonight

Thunder Bay – WEATHER DESK – If you’re waking up in Geraldton or anywhere in the Greenstone region, congratulations — you’ve survived another Northern Ontario deep freeze morning.

As of 6:00 AM EST, it’s a frosty -25.7°C under mostly cloudy skies, and with light southerly winds at 5 km/h, the wind chill is sitting at -31°C. With humidity at 79% and a dew point of -28.3°C, there’s plenty of moisture in the air — enough to fuel tonight’s flurries.

Visibility is solid at 16 km, and the barometric pressure is at a strong 102.8 kPa and rising, signaling generally stable weather — though not necessarily warm or snow-free.

Today will feature a mix of sun and cloud, becoming overcast by this afternoon. The high will “warm up” to -11°C, but expect wind chills to remain sharp — -33°C this morning and -16°C by late afternoon. With temperatures like that, there’s a real risk of frostbite, especially on exposed skin.

Tonight: Clouds Build, Light Snow Moves In

The forecast for tonight calls for cloudy skies and a 40% chance of evening flurries, turning into light snow near midnight, with local accumulation of about 2 cm. Winds remain light (up to 15 km/h), but combined with the overnight low of -15°C, it will feel closer to -19°C with the wind chill. Not a blizzard by any means, but just enough to keep your driveway interesting by morning.

Tuesday and Beyond: Persistent Flurries, Seasonal Chill

Tuesday brings periods of snow in the morning, tapering to a 30% chance of flurries through the afternoon. Another 2 cm of fresh snow is expected, with a high of -11°C. Wind chills will be around -19°C in the morning and improve to -14°C in the afternoon.

Tuesday night cools down to -20°C, with cloudy periods and another 30% chance of flurries.

Wednesday offers a mix of sun and cloud and a high of -13°C, followed by a continued chance of flurries Wednesday night and a low of -19°C. Through the end of the week, the weather holds steady — highs between -12°C and -14°C, and overnight lows in the -18°C to -25°C range, with occasional snow chances almost every day.

What to Wear

This is frostbite-prevention weather, not fashion season:

  • Start with thermal base layers

  • Add a windproof insulated jacket and snow pants

  • Mitts, toque, scarf, and face covering are non-negotiable

  • Snow boots that can handle a bit of snow and a lot of chill

If you’re heading out this evening, pack an extra layer — snow and temperatures dropping fast can make things feel colder than the forecast suggests.

❄️ Weather Trivia Time!

Did you know? Geraldton holds the title for one of Ontario’s most frost-prone towns. With its location well north of Lake Superior and away from major warming bodies of water, it regularly sees early frosts in fall and late frosts in spring — a true four-season survival zone!
