Quick 911 call from neighbour helps crews stop flames at front door before they spread
THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) crews responded around 4:30 p.m. Monday to reports of smoke and flames at a small residence on West Gore Street in Westfort.
Firefighters arrived to find flames near the front door. Crews stretched attack lines and quickly knocked down the fire, preventing it from spreading through the home. Light smoke inside was cleared using a high-volume electric fan.
A watchful neighbour who promptly called 911 is being credited with helping minimize damage.
Following an on-scene investigation, TBFR determined the cause to be an improperly discarded cigarette butt.
TBFR reminds residents to call 911 at the first sign of smoke or fire and to properly extinguish and dispose of smoking materials—preferably in a deep, non-combustible container filled with water or sand. Quick reporting and community vigilance can make all the difference in protecting life and property.
