Thunder Bay Homicides in 2025: Four in the City, Plus One in Shuniah Brings CMA Total to Five

Thunder Bay – NEWS – Thunder Bay has recorded four homicides in 2025. A separate homicide in Shuniah—part of the Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area (CMA)—brings the regional total to five.

While any loss of life is tragic, the year-to-date total is tracking below recent peaks seen in past years for the CMA. (Thunder Bay recorded 15 homicides in 2022, the highest rate among Canadian CMAs that year.)

The Shuniah Homicide (CMA) — Why It Counts Toward Thunder Bay’s Regional Total

Shuniah Homicide (July 15)

What happened: Shelley Marconi, 54, of Shuniah, was killed. Kyle Barry, 26 (also of Shuniah) was charged with second-degree murder and remanded into custody; his initial court appearance was scheduled in Thunder Bay.

Why Shuniah is included in Thunder Bay’s CMA numbers

The Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area includes the City of Thunder Bay plus surrounding municipalities: Shuniah, Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, Conmee, O’Connor, Gillies, and Fort William First Nation. Because Shuniah is inside the Thunder Bay CMA, homicides there are counted in regional (CMA) totals, even though they occurred outside the city limits. This delineation follows Statistics Canada’s CMA methodology (a core urban area plus adjacent municipalities with strong commuting ties).

How 2025 Compares (Context)

  • 2025 YTD: Four city homicides, five across the CMA (including Shuniah).

  • 2024: Multiple outlets reported eight homicides in the Thunder Bay CMA for 2024, contributing to a persistently high violent-crime index.

  • 2022: Record 15 homicides, the highest rate among Canadian CMAs.

Bottom line: As of October 1, 2025 is trending below some recent years’ totals—but investigations remain active and subject to updates.
