Thunder Bay Fire Rescue knocked down heavy flames in a six-plex just after 2 a.m., containing the blaze to one unit. Crews caution against storing flammable materials in homes
THUNDER BAY – NEWS — Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR) was dispatched at 1:50 a.m., October 2 to reports of a possible explosion and fire on the first floor of a six-unit apartment building on McLaughlin Street.
First-arriving crews encountered heavy smoke and flames.
Big response, fast knockdown
A second alarm was called to bring additional resources. In total, seven pumpers, one aerial ladder, and a command unit responded. Firefighters deployed multiple attack lines and quickly knocked down the blaze, containing it to the apartment of origin.
Residents displaced; utilities disconnected
While the fire was confined to one unit, extensive damage required utilities to be disconnected to the building, displacing residents in five other units—more than a dozen people in total.
Investigation underway
TBFR is holding the scene pending an investigation into the cause. No further details were immediately released.
Safety reminder
Fire officials urge residents not to store dangerous or flammable substances in homes or apartments. Proper storage and disposal significantly reduce fire risk.
