Sudbury – WILDFIRE UPDATE — As of 6:00 p.m. EDT on September 14, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) reports that the Northeast Fire Region is currently free of active wildland fires. No new fire starts were confirmed throughout the day.

Current Wildland Fire Hazard Conditions

While the region is fire-free at this time, hazard levels remain a concern in some areas:

  • Low to Moderate hazard: Present in northern and western areas, including regions surrounding Kirkland Lake and Elliot Lake.

  • Moderate to High hazard: Detected south and east of these communities, where conditions remain drier.

Stay FireSmart: Simple Steps Make a Big Difference

Wildland fires are especially dangerous when they impact wildland-urban interface zones—neighbourhoods close to forests. Ontario residents are encouraged to take part in the FireSmart program, which provides clear steps for reducing the risk of fire damage to homes, cottages, and communities.

Practical tips include:

  • Clearing dry leaves and branches from around buildings

  • Storing firewood away from structures

  • Maintaining grass and brush near homes

Outdoor Burning Regulations Remain in Effect

As fall yard cleanup begins, AFFES reminds the public to exercise extreme caution with outdoor burning. If burning is necessary:

  • Fires must be lit no earlier than two hours before sunset

  • All fires must be extinguished within two hours after sunrise

  • Always keep adequate water and tools nearby

  • Consider composting or taking debris to landfill instead
