Thunder Bay Police Crime Update: May Street Assaults Lead to Multiple Charges

THUNDER BAY — TBPS Primary Response officers were dispatched to the 300 block of May Street North around 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025, for an assault in progress.

Police were told a male and female were assaulting a woman.

Witnesses who tried to intervene reported the suspects came onto their private property; one witness suffered a minor injury from an edged weapon. Officers later learned a bystander was also assaulted.

Arrest and Charges

Ryan COASTER, 29, is charged with:

  • Assault with a Weapon ×2 — Criminal Code s.267 (hybrid; max 10 years if indictable; up to 2 years less a day and/or $5,000 if summary).

  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purposes.88 (hybrid; max 10 years indictable; up to 2 years less a day and/or $5,000 summary).

  • Forcible Entrys.72 (hybrid; max 2 years indictable; up to 2 years less a day and/or $5,000 summary).

  • Disguise With Intents.351(2) (hybrid; max 10 years indictable; up to 2 years less a day and/or $5,000 summary).

  • Obstruct Peace Officers.129 (hybrid; max 2 years indictable; up to 2 years less a day and/or $5,000 summary).

  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order ×3s.733.1 (hybrid; max 4 years indictable; up to 2 years less a day and/or $5,000 summary).

Notes: Actual sentences depend on the facts, prior record, and Crown election. Courts may also consider weapons prohibition orders on conviction where public safety is at issue.

Court Status

The accused appeared in court Wednesday and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date. The investigation is ongoing.

All accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
