Northwest Region Wildfire Situation

THUNDER BAY – Wildfire Update – As of 5:30 p.m. CDT on August 23, no new wildland fires have been confirmed in Ontario’s Northwest Region.

That is not to say all is well across the district however, currently, there are 28 active wildfires burning across the region.

Among these:

  • 2 fires are not under control

  • 3 fires are under control

  • 23 fires are being observed

This represents an ongoing but largely manageable fire season in the Northwest, although shifting conditions may change that quickly.

Fire Hazard Mostly Low – But Thunder Bay Region is at Higher Risk

The wildland fire hazard remains predominantly low across Northwestern Ontario. However, residents and visitors in Thunder Bay and its surrounding area should note a high fire hazard rating in that region.

Several small pockets of moderate hazard are scattered elsewhere across the region. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially during dry or windy periods.

Drones Around Fires? Don’t Do It

Flying drones near wildfires is illegal and dangerous. These devices interfere with firefighting aircraft and threaten the safety of emergency personnel.

Whether you’re a recreational drone operator or looking to capture dramatic footage, remember: a drone in the air means firefighting efforts may be grounded. Stay clear, stay safe, and let first responders do their work without interference.
