THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE 2025 — The Northeast Fire Region saw no new wildland fires confirmed as of 6:05 p.m. EDT on July 30, according to the latest update from Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES).

While there were no new starts, 10 wildfires remain active in the region. All are currently being observed, with no fires listed as out of control or requiring immediate suppression.

Fire Hazard Conditions

The wildland fire hazard in the Northeast Region ranges from low to high, but authorities are particularly concerned about extreme fire conditions around the Kawartha Highlands. Residents and visitors in that area are urged to be vigilant and take extra precautions.

To monitor hazard conditions in real time, residents are encouraged to consult the Interactive Fire Map.

Protecting Property with FireSmart

As wildland fires increasingly impact wildland-urban interfaces — areas where neighbourhoods border forests — Ontario officials are promoting the FireSmart program. This initiative offers practical steps homeowners and cottagers can take to protect properties from wildfire risks.

Even small actions, such as clearing brush near structures, moving firewood away from homes, and choosing fire-resistant building materials, can significantly reduce the chance of fire spread.

🔥 Outdoor Burning Regulations

AFFES reminds the public to follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations carefully, especially during periods of elevated fire hazard.

If outdoor burning is necessary:

  • Fires must be started no earlier than two hours before sunset and fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise

  • Always keep adequate water and tools on hand to control the fire

  • Use alternative methods like composting or municipal landfill disposal when possible

For full regulations, visit Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.
